Microplastics are tiny, synthetic solid plastic particles ranging from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters in size that are insoluble in water. They originate from both primary sources, such as cosmetics and industrial processes, and secondary sources resulting from the breakdown of larger plastic debris. These persistent particles cause widespread environmental pollution, accumulating in natural ecosystems and entering the food chain.
