Mesial temporal sclerosis (also known as hippocampal sclerosis) is a neuropathological condition characterized by severe neuronal cell loss and gliosis in the hippocampus. It is a common underlying cause of chronic, medically refractory mesial temporal lobe epilepsy and can be identified using neuroimaging techniques such as MRI and PET scans.
