Meningitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, collectively known as the meninges. The condition is most commonly caused by viral or bacterial infections, though it can also result from other microorganisms or non-infectious causes. Common symptoms include fever, headache, neck stiffness, confusion, and sensitivity to light or sound.
