The medulla, or medulla oblongata, is a long stem-like structure that makes up the lower part of the brainstem. It is a cone-shaped neuronal mass responsible for regulating essential autonomic and involuntary functions, such as breathing, heart rate, blood pressure, and reflexes like vomiting and sneezing.
