The mate budget is an experimental paradigm used in evolutionary psychology to study how individuals prioritize different traits in romantic partners under resource constraints. Developed by Norman Li and colleagues, the method forces participants to allocate a limited budget of points to purchase varying levels of partner characteristics, distinguishing between 'necessities' (such as physical attractiveness or social status) and 'luxuries' (such as creativity or talent).
