A mass extinction event, also known as a biotic crisis, is a widespread and rapid decrease in the biodiversity on Earth. It is characterized by a sharp fall in the diversity and abundance of multicellular organisms, occurring when the rate of extinction significantly exceeds the background extinction rate. Earth's history has been marked by several major mass extinctions, most notably the "Big Five" events.
