Masking (behavior)
Topic
Masking, also known as social camouflaging, is a defensive behavior in which an individual consciously or unconsciously conceals their natural personality, traits, or behaviors to conform to social pressures. It is commonly utilized by neurodivergent individuals, such as those on the autism spectrum, to avoid stigma, abuse, or social rejection. While it can help individuals navigate social environments, prolonged masking is often associated with significant mental exhaustion and psychological distress.
