Makhachkala is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Dagestan, Russia, located on the western coast of the Caspian Sea. It is an important economic, educational, scientific, and cultural center of the North Caucasus region. Historically known as Petrovskoye and Port-Petrovsk, the city is also a major Russian seaport.
