Mahatma Gandhi (1869–1948), also known as Mohandas K. Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, political leader, and independence activist who developed and applied nonviolent resistance in the struggle against British rule. He became an internationally recognized symbol of civil rights, peace, and ethical leadership.
