Lou Gehrig (1903–1941) was an American baseball player and New York Yankees first baseman known as the “Iron Horse.” His diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) brought widespread attention to the disease, which became known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
