The liver is a major metabolic organ exclusively found in vertebrates that performs essential biological functions such as detoxification, protein synthesis, and the production of biochemicals necessary for digestion. In humans, it is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, below the diaphragm. It plays a critical role in metabolism, regulation of glycogen storage, and red blood cell decomposition.
