Liberalism is a political and moral philosophy based on the rights of the individual, liberty, consent of the governed, and political equality. It generally supports broad individual rights, democracy, secularism, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of religion. Historically, liberals have sought to replace absolute monarchy, hereditary privilege, state religion, and other traditional forms of governance with representative democracy and the rule of law.
