The leisure class refers to a segment of the upper class whose members are historically exempt from productive labor and instead engage in conspicuous leisure and consumption to signal their high social status. Popularized by sociologist Thorstein Veblen in his 1899 treatise 'The Theory of the Leisure Class', the concept describes how wealth is publicly demonstrated through non-productive activities and the acquisition of luxury goods.
