Josef Breuer was an Austrian physician and physiologist whose discoveries in neurophysiology included important work on the vestibular system and respiration. His treatment of Bertha Pappenheim, known as Anna O., helped establish the cathartic method, an important precursor to psychoanalysis developed with Sigmund Freud.
