The Jim Crow laws were state and local statutes enacted in the Southern United States from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century that enforced racial segregation. These laws mandated the systematic separation of Black and white Americans in public facilities, transportation, and schools, while also disenfranchising Black voters. They remained in effect until the passage of landmark federal civil rights legislation in the mid-1960s.
