The Iranian Revolution, also known as the Islamic Revolution, was a popular uprising in 1978–1979 that resulted in the overthrow of the Pahlavi dynasty and the end of the Persian monarchy. Led by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the revolution replaced the secular, pro-Western government of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi with a theocratic Islamic Republic.
