Insulin resistance is a pathological condition in which cells in insulin-sensitive tissues fail to respond normally to the hormone insulin. This impaired response prevents cells from easily absorbing glucose from the bloodstream, prompting the pancreas to produce more insulin and often leading to hyperinsulinemia. It is a major underlying cause of type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.
