Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), also known as somatomedin C, is a hormone similar in molecular structure to insulin that plays an essential role in childhood growth and continues to have anabolic effects in adults. It is primarily produced by the liver in response to stimulation by growth hormone (GH) and mediates many of its growth-promoting effects.
