The Inquisition was a group of decentralized institutions within the judicial system of the Catholic Church whose aim was to combat heresy, apostasy, and other religious offenses. Originating in the 12th century, these ecclesiastical tribunals investigated and tried individuals accused of beliefs or practices contrary to Catholic dogma.
