The inheritance of acquired traits, also known as Lamarckism or soft inheritance, is the hypothesis that an organism can pass on physical characteristics acquired through use or disuse during its lifetime to its offspring. Named after the French biologist Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, the concept was a prominent early theory of evolution but was later largely superseded by Mendelian genetics and the Modern Synthesis.
