The Indo-European languages are a major language family native to the northern Indian subcontinent, most of Europe, and the Iranian plateau. It is one of the world's largest language families by number of speakers, encompassing major modern languages such as English, Spanish, Hindi, Russian, and Portuguese. All of these languages descend from a single prehistoric ancestor known as Proto-Indo-European.
