Incubation is the biological process by which certain oviparous (egg-laying) animals, such as birds and reptiles, keep their eggs at an optimal temperature and humidity to support embryonic development until hatching. The term is also widely used in microbiology and medicine to describe the maintenance of controlled environmental conditions for growing cell cultures or the period during which a pathogen develops inside a host.
