An ice age is a long-term period of reduction in the temperature of Earth's surface and atmosphere, resulting in the presence or expansion of continental and polar ice sheets and alpine glaciers. Within a long-term ice age, individual pulses of cold climate are known as glacial periods, which alternate with warmer periods called interglacials. Earth is currently in the Quaternary glaciation, which began approximately 2.58 million years ago.
