Hypometabolism is a physiological state characterized by an abnormally low metabolic rate, where an organism or specific tissue significantly reduces its energy consumption and metabolic activity. In medical contexts, localized hypometabolism (such as cerebral glucose hypometabolism) is a key diagnostic marker for neurodegenerative conditions like Alzheimer's disease and epilepsy, while systemic hypometabolism occurs naturally in animals during dormancy, hibernation, or aestivation.
