Hybridization refers to the process of combining different elements to form a hybrid. In biology, it is the breeding of individuals from different species or varieties to produce offspring with mixed genetic traits. In chemistry and molecular biology, the term describes the mixing of atomic orbitals to form new hybrid orbitals, as well as the binding of complementary single-stranded nucleic acid molecules.
