Hunter-Russell syndrome (sometimes historically referred to as the British syndrome in the context of Minamata disease) is a neurological disorder caused by severe organic mercury poisoning, specifically methylmercury. It is characterized by symptoms such as sensory disturbances, constriction of the visual field, ataxia, and dysarthria. The syndrome was first described in 1940 by Donald Hunter and Dorothy S. Russell following occupational exposure cases in a British chemical factory.
