Gut motility
Topic
Gut motility, or gastrointestinal motility, refers to the stretching and contraction of the muscles in the gastrointestinal tract that enables food to move through the digestive system. This complex process is regulated by the nervous system, hormones, and the enteric nervous system to facilitate digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste excretion. Disruption in this coordinated movement can lead to various gastrointestinal motility disorders, such as constipation, diarrhea, or gastroparesis.
