The great apes, belonging to the taxonomic family Hominidae, are a group of primates that includes eight extant species across four genera: orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees, bonobos, and humans. They are characterized by their large size, high cognitive abilities, complex social structures, and lack of tails. Except for humans, who have a global distribution, wild populations of great apes are native to the tropical forests of Africa and Southeast Asia.
