The grandfather effect refers to the legal, regulatory, or policy phenomenon where existing entities, practices, or individuals are exempted from new rules or regulations, allowing them to continue under previous standards. In genetics and evolutionary biology, the term is also used to describe the transgenerational influence of a grandfather's age or presence on the life expectancy, telomere length, or fitness of his grandchildren.
