Gladiatorial games were public spectacles in the Roman Republic and Roman Empire featuring armed combatants who fought against each other, wild animals, or condemned criminals. Often originating as funeral games (munera), these violent events served as a major form of popular entertainment and political display in arenas across the Roman world. While some participants were volunteers, the majority of gladiators were enslaved individuals, prisoners of war, or criminals trained under harsh conditions.
