The Gila monster (Heloderma suspectum) is a species of heavy, slow-moving venomous lizard native to the Southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Growing up to 22 inches long, it is the only venomous lizard native to the United States and is characterized by its beaded, black and pinkish-orange skin.
