Gigantopithecus
Topic
Gigantopithecus is an extinct genus of giant ape that lived in central to southern China from two million to approximately 215,000–295,000 years ago during the Early to Middle Pleistocene. Represented by the single species Gigantopithecus blacki, it is widely considered the largest known primate to have ever lived, with estimates suggesting it could weigh between 200 and 300 kilograms. First identified in 1935 from fossilized teeth found in a Chinese drugstore, its remains consist primarily of teeth and mandibles.
