In biology and genetics, the germline is the population of a multicellular organism's cells that develop into germ cells, which form gametes such as eggs and sperm. These cells differentiate from primordial germ cells in the gonads and are responsible for passing genetic information to the next generation. Unlike somatic cells, mutations in germline cells can be inherited by offspring.
