Growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) is a protein that in humans is encoded by the GDF15 gene. First identified as Macrophage inhibitory cytokine-1 (MIC-1), it belongs to the transforming growth factor beta superfamily. It plays a significant role in regulating inflammatory and apoptotic pathways in response to cellular injury and stress.
