The Flynn effect is the substantial, long-term rise in average scores on fluid and crystallized intelligence tests observed across many parts of the world during the 20th century. Named after researcher James Flynn, it describes gains that require periodic IQ-test renorming and has prompted debate about environmental and methodological causes.
