Fast Mouths

In the cosmology of the indigenous Pirahã people of the Amazon Basin, "fast mouths" (or fast-mouth spirits) are invisible jungle entities that are believed to reside in the forest. Although they are spirits, the Pirahã perceive them as real, physical beings that look like humans but speak and behave differently, representing one of the few exceptions to their strict cultural focus on immediate, empirical reality.
