Factor V Leiden is a mutated variant of human factor V, a protein essential for blood clotting, which leads to an increased tendency to form abnormal blood clots. This genetic mutation prevents anticoagulant protein C from normally inhibiting factor V, resulting in a hypercoagulable state. It is the most common hereditary hypercoagulability disorder among individuals of European descent.
