In ecology, environmental or local abundance refers to the relative representation of a species within a particular ecosystem, typically measured by the number of individuals found per sample. It is a fundamental metric used alongside species richness to calculate biodiversity and understand community structures. The ratio of one species' population to others in the same habitat is known as relative species abundance.
