Eleusinian Mysteries
Topic
The Eleusinian Mysteries were annual initiations held for the cult of Demeter and Persephone based at the Panhellenic Sanctuary of Eleusis in ancient Greece. Considered the most famous of the secret religious rites of ancient Greece, their origins trace back to a Bronze Age agrarian cult with roots in the Mycenaean period. The rituals represented the myth of the abduction of Persephone by Hades and symbolized the cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
