In the general theory of relativity, the Einstein field equations relate the geometry of spacetime to the distribution of matter and energy within it. First published by Albert Einstein in 1915 as a tensor equation, they describe gravity not as a force, but as a consequence of spacetime curvature caused by mass and energy.
