Egyptian hieroglyphs were the formal writing system used in Ancient Egypt to write the Egyptian language. This complex system combined logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements, utilizing over 1,000 distinct characters. Cursive hieroglyphs were commonly used for religious literature on papyrus and wood, and the system eventually gave rise to the hieratic and demotic scripts.
