An egg is an organic vessel grown by an animal to carry a possibly fertilized egg cell, or zygote. Within this protective structure, an embryo is incubated and nourished until it develops into a fetus capable of surviving on its own and hatching. Eggs are produced by many different classes of animals, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and fish, and have been consumed by humans for millennia.
