The DARPA Grand Challenge is a series of prize competitions funded by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency to accelerate autonomous-vehicle technology. The inaugural 2004 event challenged vehicles to navigate a desert course without human control, followed by increasingly complex autonomous-driving competitions.
