Daniel Shays (c. 1747–1825) was a Massachusetts farmer and Revolutionary War captain who led an armed uprising of indebted farmers in 1786–1787. Shays’ Rebellion helped expose weaknesses in the Articles of Confederation and influenced support for a stronger federal government.
