Dagestan, officially the Republic of Dagestan, is a federal subject and republic of Russia situated in the North Caucasus region of Eastern Europe along the Caspian Sea. It is the southernmost tip of Russia, sharing land borders with Azerbaijan, Georgia, Chechnya, Stavropol Krai, and Kalmykia. The republic is highly ethnically diverse and its capital and largest city is Makhachkala.
