Cyborg insects, often developed under programs like DARPA's Hybrid Insect Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (HI-MEMS), are bio-hybrid organisms created by integrating electronic components and micro-mechanical systems into living insects. By implanting these interfaces during early developmental stages, researchers can control the insects' movements via electrical stimulation of their muscles or nerves.
