Cuneiform is a logo-syllabic writing system that was used to write several languages of the ancient Near East, including Sumerian and Akkadian. Characterized by its wedge-shaped impressions made on clay tablets, it is recognized as one of the earliest known systems of writing. The script was in active use from the early Bronze Age until the beginning of the Common Era.
