CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats) is a family of DNA sequences found within the genomes of prokaryotic organisms such as bacteria and archaea. Derived from fragments of bacteriophages that previously infected the organism, these sequences play a vital role in the prokaryotic antiviral defense system. When adapted into biotechnology, the CRISPR-Cas9 system functions as a powerful gene-editing tool capable of modifying DNA sequences within living organisms.
