The Corpus Juris Civilis ("Body of Civil Law") is a collection of fundamental works in jurisprudence issued from 529 to 534 by order of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. It served as the sole authority for Roman law in the Eastern Roman Empire and later became the foundation for the civil law systems of modern continental Europe.
