Comancheria, meaning “Comanche land,” was a large Comanche polity and sphere of influence in the southern Great Plains. At its height before the 1860s, it encompassed much of present-day New Mexico and West Texas, along with adjacent areas of the southern United States and northern Mexico; some historians describe it as an empire.
